Let me explain the whole fiscal cliff thing as I understand it and in my extremely oversimplified and common vernacular. The federal government runs on a fiscal year that begins each year on October 1. So, Oct 1, 2012 is in all reality FY13 (Fiscal year 2013). Ideally, the annual federal budget process begins by the first Monday in February and ends on October 1st, the start of the government’s fiscal year. The House and Senate both prepare their versions of the budget for the next fiscal year and then negotiate until a final version is approved by the majority vote. Then, the President can veto it if he completely disagrees with it, and the process starts again, but that’s not common. Well, starting in 2009, no budget was ever approved and made it through the process. In all reality, the last real budget we had was signed in 1997 by President Clinton (New Gingrich was Speaker then).
Each year, we face a horrible situation of “government shutdown” if no budget is in place each and every year. That basically shuts down all government payments and systems except for emergency only. That means all contracts, employees, functions, etc. are SHUT DOWN. Only emergency basis government like active military during active wartime (which let’s not forget that we are at war) but no benefits for others. No payments at all! No Veterans benefits, no government payroll or benefits are paid, no contracts are paid (sorry Lockheed-Martin – you and all your employees are included in that), no nothing. Well, except those assholes who say they are our leaders get paid.
The first wriggle from people I personally know who it will affect usually starts around now – December 5-6ish. Rather than shut down for the past several years, we have passed what is referred to as a Continuing Resolution which basically operates the government status quo. This so called fiscal cliff that dumass who is supposed to be everybody’s president is threatening is that the continuing resolution does not work. Bush era tax cuts are scheduled to expire this year, and in August 2011, the Budget Control Act of 2011 was passed. In other words, like in my world, all my contracts keep going away while my bills pile up. No money for rent on December 1st means my family in homeless, my college son is on his own, and my grandbaby will be an institutionalized person from birth dependent on the government rather than his/her family.
What this means is to our country is crazy! Our degradation will be unprecedented, but worst of all, we will be very vulnerable to our enemies, which believe it or not people is neither the republicans nor the democrats. It’s the fucking assholes who blew up our twin towers and who continually hang out with nothing to do except plan a stupid ass attack on us! I can’t imagine how we as a country can allow this. Go walk off a cliff you asshole! But, I’m not jumping after you. Shame on you Mr. President for even bluffing on this level. I would tell my children not to play with someone with such dangerous threats. It makes me so angry that I want to say, go ahead and do it. Too bad the cliff is not real. That would save us all a lot of trouble and especially if all those jerkoffs in DC jumped right after him! Jump you assholes! Find a real cliff and jump but leave my country off the suicide watch list. Jeez!
While I disagree with you some, I do think that before we cut spending on those that work for our government, we should first stop paying those that are voting for a year. Just cutting their salary and benefits would push both groups to make better choices. This country has to learn to compromise. We are getting further and further apart.
I know right! And, there could be a few minor inaccuracies in my piece lol! There are a lot of solutions to these problems. We have hired some highly intelligent and experienced bipartisan teams over past decade with some really great solutions, but no one wants a solution. I really believe politics and ratings are fueled only by a fight rather than a solution.
Right. It is sad and the people pay.
